The Premier League relegation rival trying to sign Leeds United icon Kalvin Phillips

For such a long time, Kalvin Phillips has been linked with a move back to Leeds United. His move to Man City has completely failed, failing within the first few months of the move itself.

The 30-year-old midfielder has managed one appearance this season, playing for just seven minutes in a Cup game. It comes after Phillips suffered an injury in the summer, preventing him from earning a move.

The England midfielder has already left City twice on loan to West Ham in the second half of the 2023-24 campaign, and then to Ipswich for 2024-25. Phillips signed a six-year deal at City in the summer of 2022.

Who would you name in your dream Leeds 5-a-side team? 🤔

It means Phillips has two and a half years left on his contract. The Leeds academy graduate will be keen to find himself a new club this month, even if it is on loan. Now, a relegation-threatened side are interested.

Wolves want to sign Kalvin Phillips from Man City this month

Currently, it is probably fair to say that as many as six clubs are considered relegation candidates. With Bournemouth only a point above Leeds in 15th, Andoni Iraola’s men will be keen not to drop in.

But the Cherries are among it, with Leeds and Forest sitting above the drop zone. West Ham, Burnley and Wolves currently occupy the bottom three and after their first win, Wolves are trying to bolster the side.

Wolves smashed West Ham to pick up their first win of the season on the weekend, climbing to six points. Now, the FourFourTwo’s Joe Donnohue claims Wolves are interested in signing midfielder Phillips on loan.

Which former Leeds player would you have back, if you could pick one? Raphinha surely has to be up there💎

Kalvin Phillips needs a new home, not another hotel stay

One thing has been made clear regarding Phillips. That is, the midfielder has no future at Man City in the first team. Pep Guardiola doesn’t rate the Thorp Arch talent, and he will be allowed to leave The Etihad.

But having already left Man City on two occasions to go on loan to West Ham, which could not have gone worse, picking up a red card and suffering injuries – and Ipswich, Phillips will want a permanent switch.

Is he going to get that in January? Probably not. Phillips is on big wages and City will still require a tidy sum for the versatile star with his contract still boasting the best part of three years left, before it expires.

But Phillips does need a new home instead of a temporary switch to get his career back on track. A move to Wolves isn’t that – Wolves are likely to be relegated and Phillips would return to City come June 2026.
