The clause in deal for Joe Rodon that could see Leeds United pay Tottenham even more cash

Leeds United have confirmed the permanent signing of Joe Rodon from Tottenham Hotspur after the two clubs agreed a £40m move for Archie Gray to the North London club.

While the two stars are not involved in the same deal, Gray’s move to Tottenham gave Leeds the chance to talk to Spurs about a deal for 26-year-old Rodon and agreeing a £10m move for the Wales defender.

Rodon was excellent for Leeds last season and clocked up 50 appearances for Daniel Farke’s side in a season in which Leeds reached the Championship play-off final, only to fall at final hurdle at Wembley.

Leeds are favourites to gain promotion this season as Farke eyes a third promotion to the Premier League and Rodon has opted to join Leeds permanently, signing a contract until the summer of 2028 in Yorkshire.

But there is a clause in Rodon’s move to Spurs that could see Leeds have to pay Tottenham more cash:

While it is heartbreaking, as Leeds say in their official statement, to lose Gray it is a deal that needed to happen. Profit & Sustainability Rules dictated Leeds needed to sell one big player to avoid a deduction.

The same has happened with Newcastle and Leicester, the latter forced into selling Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea. Leeds have raked in a profit of £30m, and the arrival of defender Rodon.

But TeamTalk say that Leeds may end up paying more than the £10m it has cost the club to sign Rodon. Indeed, they claim that if Leeds do gain promotion come next summer, then Spurs will receive a fee.

Rodon ignored Premier League interest to rejoin Leeds today

Since the defeat at Wembley, all three newly-promoted Premier League sides have shown interest in Rodon. Kieran McKenna is a big fan and even made a £10m offer to sign Rodon, but it was rejected.

Indeed, Spurs gave Leeds priority after Rodon had been convinced to rejoin, in order to keep Leeds sweet and agree a Gray sale. Graham Smyth has since reported that Brentford wanted to sign Rodon.

But again, Rodon ignored a move to West London after Gray had a ‘change of heart’ over a move to Thomas Frank’s side. Instead, Gray went to Spurs and Rodon returned to Leeds ahead of 2024-25.
