Stuart Dallas thinks new £20m Leeds United target is ‘outstanding’

Leeds United are still waiting to make their first signing of the summer, but reports suggest the club are already looking closely at one of the Championship’s standout midfield performers.

If the latest claims are accurate, the move could have significant consequences for Daniel Farke’s existing options in the middle of the park, with doubts over the future of Ilia Gruev and Ao Tanaka emerging.

While Leeds continue to assess targets ahead of a second season in the Premier League, attention has turned towards a midfielder who has already earned praise from one of the club’s modern-day icons.

Stuart Dallas sums up exactly why Leeds want Shea Charles

Few opinions carry more weight among Leeds supporters than those of Stuart Dallas, and the former Whites favourite recently delivered a glowing assessment of one young midfielder on international duty.

Leeds have been linked with a £20m move for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, who starred for the Saints during their run to the play-off final last season, before the Saints were disqualified.

Back in March, after Northern Ireland’s World Cup play-off defeat to Italy, Dallas said that Northern Ireland have a bright future with players like Charles in central midfield, as per the Belfast Telegraph.

“Shea Charles was outstanding. They didn’t deserve to be on the losing team. He’s such a good footballer and Northern Ireland have a bright future with those type of players in the middle of the park.”

Those comments now look particularly relevant after Leeds were linked with a move for Charles. Dallas was not discussing transfer speculation or future potential. He was merely giving his thoughts on Charles.

Why Leeds want Shea Charles

It is not difficult to understand the attraction. During the 2025-26 Championship campaign, Charles made 31 league appearances, scoring three goals and providing two assists. One of his side’s best players.

His defensive numbers are equally impressive. The Northern Ireland international registered 49 tackles, 30 interceptions and 133 recoveries, while also maintaining an 84.7 per cent pass completion rate.

It explains Leeds’ interest despite their current options. Charles offers energy, defensive reliability and technical security, all qualities that would appeal to Farke heading into a Premier League campaign.

His performances were somewhat overshadowed by the controversy that engulfed Southampton after they were expelled from the Championship play-offs, but his individual campaign was very impressive.

Ao Tanaka could be the player most affected

Leeds do not typically spend £20m on squad players. If Charles arrives, he would expect to compete for significant minutes immediately.

That reality could place Ao Tanaka under the greatest pressure. Reports have already suggested that Tanaka could be sold this summer, and the arrival of another central midfielder intensifies that.

Ilia Gruev would also face a fresh challenge

Gruev’s situation appears different given that he remains under contract until 2027. There is currently far less uncertainty surrounding his future at Elland Road.

Even so, another high-profile midfield arrival would inevitably increase competition for places. Charles would expect regular football, and Leeds would not be considering a move unless he plays regularly.

Dallas’ comments may have been delivered in an international context, but they offer a useful insight into why Leeds appear interested. Both Tanaka and Gruev may find themselves under greater pressure.
