‘Sign him’… Championship club’s fans want £5m Leeds United star after what happened this weekend

Leeds United still have two games left to play but the rest of the Championship have played their penultimate match, with Leeds hosting Bristol City on Monday night.

Daniel Farke’s men will need to win the match to remain in the running for the Championship title and David Prutton has predicted “ocean liner” Leeds will do just that, even if Bristol City have been excellent.

Liam Manning is surely a contender for Championship Manager of the Season having guided The Robins into fifth, just one win away from securing a play-off spot. But even then, they will be up against it.

Leeds’ record against Bristol City is excellent, as is Farke’s. But the main task is done and that is promotion and focus will be on transfer strategy, with loan players likely to start returning to Elland Road soon.

Plymouth fans discuss Darko Gyabi after playing his last game

One of those set to return to Elland Road is £5m signing Darko Gyabi. The midfielder has spent the last 18 months on loan at Plymouth, impressing at times certainly during the 2024-25 season – but he’s done.

Leeds face Plymouth on the final day of the season and with Plymouth having finished their 45th game of the campaign with a win over Preston, Gyabi is ineligible to face Leeds on May 3 at the Home Park clash.

Gyabi [above] was seen applauding Plymouth supporters and waving to them following Saturday’s win over Preston, suggesting as though he is done with the club. Plymouth fans now want him permanently.

One Argyle fan said the former Manchester City man has “bags of potential” and would love to get him back on loan, even in League One. Plymouth are not mathematically down, but for a swing of 14 goals.

Indeed, the supporter said he would be “happy to see him back in green”. Another said “you can see the potential” and would be “happy to see him in League One” ahead of a promotion push to the top tier.

Another posted “if he wants to come, let’s get him”, and another said Gyabi would be a “quality player in League One”. It all depends on whether Gyabi is willing to play in League One, or if he has other offers.

Darko Gyabi has no future at Leeds United this summer

Staying in the Championship might have given Gyabi a mere glimmer of hope at Elland Road. But with Leeds promoted to the Premier League, there is zero chance the England U20 star is next season.

Gyabi will enter the final 12 months of his contract when he does return for pre-season in the summer, if he is still a Leeds player by that point. The Whites will know they are going to make a loss on Gyabi.

Whether they can get a bit of cash for him remains to be seen and if they are, then the chances are they will have to sell him to a Championship club. But realistically, Gyabi is not going to earn Leeds much cash.
