Leeds United have enjoyed an encouraging first third of the Championship season and are among the favourites to clinch automatic promotion.

Daniel Farke’s side are third in the Championship table with 29 points from 15 matches.

Leeds are only two points behind Sunderland and Sheffield United, who are first and second respectively in the standings.

However, as with all teams, there is still room for improvement, and Leeds are reportedly looking to strengthen their left-back department.

According to The Sunday Mirror (print edition, page 69, 10/11), Leeds are keeping tabs on Cirkin as a possible target for the January transfer window.

Sunderland do not want to sell Cirkin and want to hand the 22-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur left-back a new contract.

And, Cirkin’s latest comments suggest that he does not plan on leaving the Black Cats in the middle of the season because he is playing regularly after recovering from a long-term injury.

Dennis Cirkin’s stance on Sunderland amid Leeds United interest

Cirkin told The Northern Echo while reflecting on the comparison between this season and last: “On a personal level, sometimes I think about it and it’s just surreal to me.

“Going a whole season with three recurring injuries was a dark time and then looking at this season, I’m doing my best to keep fit.

“At the end of the day, I’m just enjoying it and that’s the most important thing, I think, is just to enjoy it with the ups, the downs, the challenges. I think I thrive off the pressure, off the challenges.”

What Sam Parkin said about Leeds United target Dennis Cirkin

Cirkin has been on the books of Sunderland since 2021 and has established himself as one of the best and most important players for the Black Cats.

The left-back has scored two goals and given one assist in 15 Championship games so far this season.

The Sunderland star’s performances have impressed many, including former Ipswich Town and Luton Town striker Sam Parkin.

Parkin told The Sunderland Echo: “When you watch him live, he is a very good athlete.

“I think he gets up and down; it is eye-catching the way he moves with the ball, but his decision-making on the ball and his ability on the ball have been top-class this season.”
