The January transfer window is edging closer and while Leeds United are expected to have a quiet window, The Whites continue to be linked with a number of new signings.

Daniel Farke has made it clear that he doesn’t expect any major moves in January. But the German will know that last January, Leeds only made one signing in Connor Roberts and fell behind their rivals.

Roberts played well when given a start but Leeds needed more than just the Wales right-back. Ipswich made a number of key signings and it saw Kieran McKenna’s side steal a march on the Yorkshire side.

A number of left-sided defenders have been linked with Leeds ahead of January, while Graham Smyth expects Leeds to move for a no.10. Now, Leeds are being linked with the MLS’ Young Player of 2024.

MLS fans react as Leeds United linked with move for Diego Luna

Reports this week state that Leeds have explored a move for Real Salt Lake talent Diego Luna. It comes after the one-time USA star had a hand in 17 goals in 31 MLS games for RSL during the 2024 campaign.

The report stats that Leeds have made preliminary checks and enquiries about a potential move, with RSL set to use Carlos Andres Gomez’s £8.3m move to Rennes as a yardstick for any sale involving Luna.

MLS fans had their say amid reports Leeds may land the next bright gem coming out of American soccer. Many believe that it would be a brilliant move for Luna…

One MLS fan said that Luna has the potential to “change” Leeds supporters. Another though, feels Luna could go “higher” than the Whites in the coming weeks and months.

Another said that he “wouldn’t mind” Luna going with Leeds linked, though a number of European clubs are also interested. One fan is desperate for Leeds to sign him, saying “please let this happen”.

Brenden Aaronson is currently one of many cogs at Leeds that connects the MLS and the Whites, and one fan posted he “would take Aaronson’s position”. It seems fans feel Luna’s exit is inevitable, then.

Diego Luna’s stats in 2024 compared to Leeds United’s attackers

Luna is clearly a talent, described as “phenomenal” by Pablo Mastroeni before he was named the league’s Young Player of the Season. Leeds are not the only club considering him with European sides interested.

There is debate to be had at the different levels played above, Luna has enjoyed a better 2024 in terms of numbers than the majority of Leeds’ attacking players, only Wilfried Gnonto scoring and creating more.

Indeed, Gnonto has had a hand in 18 goals during 2024 to Luna’s 17 though the latter has done it in nine less games. Gnonto is likely to add to that, too with the busy Christmas period now upon The Whites.
