Leeds United’s bid to sign an attacking midfielder in the summer ended up in failure, despite being linked with a whole host of no.10’s to rival Brenden Aaronson for a place in the side.

Aaronson has remained one of the first names on the team sheet under Daniel Farke, largely as there is little competition for the returning USA star. He has four goals in 16 appearances for the Yorkshire side.

A solid return, but Jon Newsome says Aaronson is only just keeping above water. Not good enough in Newsome’s eyes, for a £25m player while Simon Grayson has questioned Aaronson’s end product.

If Leeds had their way, they would have signed a no.10. Angus Kinnear says Leeds were interested in a move to sign James McAtee from Manchester City, but Pep Guardiola ordered McAtee to stay at City.

James McAtee could now link up with Crysencio Summerville

The £20m-rated Man City star has had a few games here and there for City since opting to stay put. But, The Sun now report that West Ham could make a move to sign the England U21 international in January.

That is, as a replacement for Lucas Paqueta with the Brazilian himself linked with City. The report states a move would not be a swap, but it would see McAtee link up with Crysencio Summerville at West Ham.

McAtee spent his second of two years on loan at Sheffield United in the Premier League, meaning a return to the Championship would always have been unlikely. But, he would have been a super signing.

Clearly, McAtee’s time in the Championship with Sheffield United proves he would have been a stunning signing for Leeds. But Guardiola is excited by McAtee and it looks as if he will remain there right now.

Even if, West Ham come calling in January, the chances are he will stay with City at least until the end of the season. Perhaps, if Leeds get promoted this season, the Whites may revisit a move next summer.
