Leeds United’s inability to sign a new no.10 has been slightly forgotten about largely thanks to the superb form of Brenden Aaronson during the first eight Championship games of the season.

Leeds managed to replace Crysencio Summerville in the form of Largie Ramazani and Manor Solomon. But failure to sign a new no.10 leave Leeds with only Aaronson as a natural option for Daniel Farke.

Starting six of Leeds’ eight Championship games, the USA star has scored twice and laid on one assist. Farke thinks Aaronson has been “unbelievable” this season, specifically praising Aaronson’s work rate.

He got through 90 minutes on Tuesday night and is likely to play the majority of Friday night’s trip to Sunderland. Leeds did have a number of targets to add competition alongside Aaronson in the summer.

Gustavo Hamer, Roland Sallai and even Emi Buendia were all linked with Leeds. But another option was in action in the Champions League on Tuesday night, and scored his first goal for his club in a 4-0 win.

James McAtee scores for Manchester City after Leeds links

Angus Kinnear said Leeds had looked at James McAtee, following the close of the window. Leeds were hoping Man City would allow another loan move with his £20m price tag always going to be too much.

Pep Guardiola has explained why he chose to keep McAtee and the City boss handed the England U21 star his fourth appearance of the season, giving him 30 minutes against Slovan Bratislava on Tuesday.

Halfway through his 30-minute outing, McAtee latched on to a chipped through ball from Phil Foden and lashed home City’s fourth after goals from Foden, Leeds-born Erling Haaland and Ilkay Gundogan.

Reports say this week that Man City could allow McAtee to go out on loan in January, and that may hand Leeds a chance to land the pocket-sized star who spent the previous two seasons with Sheffield United.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola said – as per The Independent: “Everyone adores him. You saw the reaction of the players, everyone loves him. He will not be a regular but in a lot of games he will help us.”

It will be interesting to see if McAtee gets the game time he needs between now and January, and then if McAtee is open to considering a loan in January. But chances are, Premier League clubs will be keen.
