Leeds United provided an interesting explanation to confirmation of Georginio Rutter’s sale to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Rutter‘s £40 million move was finally confirmed at 9.30pm on Monday night despite the Seagulls activating his release clause almost a week ago now.
Despite reports from Germany indicating Leeds would have to owe Hoffenheim a portion of money, Adam Pope has actually confirmed otherwise.
Financially, that means Leeds have once again got a good deal, but unfortunately football is played on the pitch and not in the boardroom.
Leeds’ squad is now severely weaker than last season and failure to address the four positions Daniel Farke has said he wants would be the ultimate failure for the 49ers.
Leeds explain Rutter behaviour in official statement
In the majority of Leeds’ official statements announcing player exits in the last 14 months, they have often given an indicator on how it has gone down within the club.
Take Rasmus Kristensen’s recent loan move to Eintracht Frankfurt as an example, the blame was entirely put on him for triggering a release clause for the second summer in a row.
Archie Gray, meanwhile, was given a lengthy send off in which Leeds explained his ‘heartbreaking’ sale would help them keep other key players.
Of course, that has not proved to be true as both Crysencio Summerville and now Rutter have since left, and so whatever they decide to write should be taken with a pinch of salt.
In Leeds’ official statement announcing Rutter, they have suggested he was both ‘persistent and adamant’ in his desire to leave the club following Brighton’s bid.
Leeds did, of course, look to tempt him with the offer of a new contract, by which point it was too late. This should’ve been done earlier in the summer to avoid this scenario from playing out.
Perhaps he would’ve not been so set on leaving had Leeds looked to tie him to fresh terms earlier, so instead it should be those putting the statement together taking a look at themselves.
The statement said: “Every effort was made to keep Georginio at Elland Road despite his exit clause being activated, but he was persistent and adamant in his desire to leave and we respect his decision.”
49ers now running out of excuses at Leeds
As mentioned, it has become a recurring theme under the 49ers for the blame to be placed on the players deciding to leave in official statements.
However, there is one common denominator and that is Leeds’ owners. Given how this transfer window has gone, it is becoming harder and harder to believe their excuses.
Farke has repeatedly made it clear that clauses would be a thing of the past under his management, yet Gray’s move to Tottenham was a result of one, despite signing a contract in January.
The 49ers also played a key role in getting Rutter’s signing over the line in the winter window of 2023, so they really should start to absorb some of the blame themselves.
