We all saw last season how Daniel Farke’s side failed to finish in the automatic promotion places. Leeds eventually lost to Southampton in the Championship playoff final.
While Leeds do have a strong squad, it seems that Farke thinks that he needs another midfielder for the second half of the season.
Leeds United reignite interest in Manchester City midfielder James McAtee
According to Leeds Live, Leeds are interested in Manchester City midfielder James McAtee. The Championship club have “a fondness” for the youngster.
West Ham United are keen on McAtee as well and could pay £20 million, which is beyond Leeds.
The West Yorkshire outfit cannot pay £20 million for the midfielder in the January transfer window, but, according to Leeds Live, they “could swoop to get a loan deal done”.
City manager Pep Guardiola will not stop the 22-year-old English midfielder from leaving if he wants to go and find regular first-team football.
This is not the first time that the youngster has been linked with Leeds. Angus Kinnear wanted to sign Angus Kinnear last summer.
Back in the summer of 2022, then Leeds head coach Jesse Marsch was also keen on a deal for McAtee, according to GiveMeSport.
James McAtee has been compared to Arsenal star Martin Odegaard
McAtee has come through the Manchester City youth academy, but he has failed to establish himself in the first team.
The 22-year-old midfielder had a loan spell at Sheffield United in 2022-23 and then again in 2023-24.
In his first loan spell for the Blades, McAtee scored nine goals and gave three assists in 21 Championship starts.
Last season in the Premier League, the midfielder scored three goals and provided three assists in 20 starts.
Former Blades striker Carl Asaba was hugely impressed with McAtee last season and compared him to Arsenal and Norway international attacking midfielder Martin Odegaard.
Asaba said about McAtee on Football Heaven in November 2023: “He’s a bonus player in that he plays midfield and you have an extra number in there but then he can just attack.
“He’s like Odegaard. You play him in midfield so he’s defending for you, he’s another body for them to try and navigate away from but he likes the ball 30 yards out because he can go past you like you’re not there.”
