Leeds United could lose Harry Gray in January with Joe Gelhardt reunion on the cards

While the majority of Leeds United fans are calling for the introduction of Harry Gray into Daniel Farke’s first team, there is a scenario in which Gray leaves Elland Road in January.

The 17-year-old remains one of the hottest prospects in English football at the moment, despite failing to add to his solitary senior outing. That came during a 6-0 win over Stoke City towards the end of last term.

Gray already has 10 goals for Leeds this season at U21 level, scoring more times than Leeds have done in the Premier League. The talent netted a brace for the 21s in the EFL Trophy against Accrington Stanley.

Fans are desperate for Gray to be used at senior level, though Daniel Farke believes he is the ideal gaffer to maximise Gray’s potential. However, clubs are becoming interested in the England youth international.

Hull and Charlton among clubs eyeing Leeds’ Harry Gray

With January coming in to view, clubs will be busy identifying targets and four Championship sides are keeping tabs on Gray. The Sun’s Alan Nixon reports that Hull, Charlton, Derby and Swansea all want Gray.

Indeed, all four were in attendance on Tuesday night at The Wham to watch Scott Gardner’s 21s and more importantly, Gray. They will have been impressed with his brace, especially with Leeds down to 10.

Of course, a move to Hull would see Gray reunite with Joe Gelhardt, who has been one of the division’s best players this season. Indeed, Gray has even joked that Gelhardt is having a “Ballon d’Or season”.

What is Gray’s best option ahead of January window?

Ultimately, while many Leeds fans believe Gray is ready for Farke’s first team with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Joel Piroe and Lukas Nmecha managing just three goals between them, a loan would do him wonders.

Other than his brief outing against Stoke, Gray is yet to play against senior players. While the trio above continue to stutter, Gray does remain fourth choice at Leeds and if he wants game time, a loan is needed.

But Farke would be making a mistake not to start considering Gray above the likes of Piroe in the near future. This is a player that Leeds have to manage right if they are to enjoy the fruits of his labour.

Perhaps, a short-term six-month loan to one of the Championship clubs mentioned, especially Hull, would see Gray return to Elland Road next summer, ready to go. But some would argue, he is already ready.
