If Leeds United are to enter the January transfer window for one new signing, the chances are it will be to sign a new no.10 to provide competition for Brenden Aaronson.

Angus Kinnear has made it clear following the summer window that the club did look at a number of new additions in that position. Kinnear even said Leeds considered a move for Aston Villa star Emi Buendia.

But Buendia rejected a move to Elland Road. Others including Gus Hamer, Roland Sallai and plenty more were linked with Leeds in the summer, but Leeds have entered the season with only one natural no.10.

January then, could see Leeds look to bolster such a crucial position in the side as Daniel Farke looks to push Leeds into the top two. One player that Leeds are supposedly interested in signing is James McAtee.

Kinnear confirmed after the summer that Leeds looked at McAtee, but Pep Guardiola explained why he chose to reject a move for McAtee. But, his game time has been limited in the first half of the season.

City’s woeful form means there is no room to bring in youngsters at the moment and McAtee is said to have held talks with Guardiola over a January move. Leeds are one of 12 interested clubs eyeing McAtee.

Now, Give Me Sport say City are considering a u-turn for £20m-rated McAtee and could now allow him to leave in the winter window. However, Crystal Palace and West Ham are current frontrunners to get him.

James McAtee would be a stunning signing for Leeds United

But also, a completely unrealistic one. McAtee has been there and done it in the Championship, and he impressed with Sheffield United in the Premier League last season – so why would he entertain a loan?

Right now, McAtee needs to find himself a club that will give him regular game time in the Premier League. He’s shown he is good enough for that level and while Leeds are in the second tier, it’s unlikely.

If clubs cannot agree a move for McAtee and his situation becomes desperate towards the end of the window then he might become more tempted to join Leeds, but surely, other clubs will move first.
