Leeds expected to sell another player after Archie Gray, Jesse Marsch said he is ‘one of the best’

There is going to be an influx of outgoing players at Leeds United this week as The 49ers look to trim down the squad, as Archie Gray and Charlie Cresswell close in on permanent exits.

A deal to take Gray to Tottenham is deemed as pretty much done at this stage, while Cresswell has flown out to France to complete a £3.8m move to Ligue 1 side Toulouse after struggling for game time.

Pure profit for Leeds on both fronts given Cresswell and Gray are products of the Thorp Arch academy. Diego Llorente is also expected to join Marc Roca in moving to Real Betis, both deals costing £4m.

But Leeds are not going to stop there, as The 49ers realise the size of the squad and wage bill are far too high ahead of a second season in The Championship. The next exit could be a key left-sided player.

Junior Firpo could join Gray in leaving Leeds this month

A report from The Mail claims that Leeds are ‘expecting’ left-back Junior Firpo to leave Elland Road soon. A decision needs to be made on the former Barcelona star, three years after joining the Yorkshire club.

Firpo was a key part of the Leeds side during the second half of the season under Daniel Farke, laying on a very impressive eight assists from the left side of the defence. But there is a problem in keeping him.

Aside from his defensive frailties which has exposed Leeds on a number of occasions albeit mostly in the Premier League, Firpo has just entered the last 12 months of his contract at Elland Road this summer.

What Jesse Marsch said about Firpo when Leeds manager

Leeds need to decide whether to offer him a new contract, which Firpo may choose to turn down given he always seems to generate interest from Spain after starring at both Betis and Barcelona in La Liga.

The chances are that The 49ers will look to offload Firpo this summer and get him off the wage bill. Even after pay cuts, Firpo will still be one of the club’s top earners given he was at Barcelona beforehand.

But it would be a big loss judging solely on his form during the run-in last term. A player that Jesse Marsch once said was “one of the best players in the team” after becoming manager at Elland Road.
