Leeds United are interested in doing a big-money deal for Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer before Friday’s deadline, and Carlton Palmer has compared him to Crysencio Summerville.
Hamer, 25, is regarded as one of the best central midfielders in the Championship and Leeds are keen to bring in a more attacking player that can sit alongside the likes of Ilia Gruev or skipper Ethan Ampadu.
Plenty of midfielders have been linked as Daniel Farke eyes another midfield body having lost Archie Gray and Glen Kamara, while only bringing in Joe Rothwell on loan in that position during the summer months.
Brazil-born Hamer was the subject of a £13m bid from Leeds earlier this week, which Chris Wilder has publicly described as derisory. Hamer’s £15m release clause expired earlier this summer after relegation.
Palmer believes Leeds must pay the money if they want Hamer
Already this season, Hamer has shown why Leeds want to sign him with two goals in three Championship games. A genuine game-changer at Championship level, he has 44 goals and assists in 126 appearances.
Leeds must pay £18m if they are to sign Hamer, and Hamer himself is said to have agreed personal terms with Leeds. Now, former Leeds man Carlton Palmer has reacted to Hamer’s asking price on FLW.
“Will Leeds United come back with a bigger offer? They sold Summerville for £25m, do you put Hamer into the same category as Summerville? At the end of the day, everybody knows that Leeds have money.
“It’s the end of the window, it is what it is, so you’ve got to pay out. We’ll wait and see if Leeds come back with an improved offer. Sheffield United want as much as £18m to even consider letting him go,” he said.
Is Hamer worth the £18m fee Leeds have been told to pay?
There is no doubt that Hamer would be a stunning signing for Leeds. Not only does it dramatically improve Leeds’ chances of promotion, but it significantly reduces a direct rival’s chance of going up.
Leeds would be getting a wonderful player at this level and the chances are, he could easily go and have a hand in 20 goals from the middle of the park this season. If it gets Leeds up, it is easily worth the £18m.
But what should tempt Leeds more than anything is that it would weaken Wilder’s Blades considerably. Sheffield United will be up there this season, but Leeds have an opportunity to hurt a direct opponent.
