If reports in France are to be believed, Leeds have identified their top target this summer should they lose Raphinha, with Foot Mercato reporting that we are interested in Cody Gakpo.
Gakpo goes into this summer off the back of an amazing season with PSV Eindhoven. In all competitions, he has scored 19 goals and contributed 14 assists.
Foot Mercato reports that PSV want £25.9 million for Gakpo. That is not a problem for Leeds. So it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks.
But what else do we know about Gakpo? Here is a look at five facts concerning the 23-year-old…
Arsenal’s top target
Leeds are not the only side who may prioritise a move for Gakpo. Reports in May claimed that Arsenal rated the winger just as highly. Of course, it is the Gunners who are now chasing Raphinha.
Shades of Thierry Henry
Must not get too excited. Must not get too excited. But Soccerlink reported that Arsenal scouts were reminded of Thierry Henry when they went to watch the Netherlands international.
He has an agreement with PSV that he can go
PSV will not want to lose Gakpo. But he has already struck a deal with the club that he can go if a suitable offer comes in after agreeing to extend his contract until 2026, according to The Athletic.
His international debut came at Euro 2020
International managers will usually use the games leading up to a tournament to try some new faces out. But Gakpo made his bow for his country on the big stage itself, with his debut coming against Gjanni Alioski’s North Macedonia.
Has faced both Crysencio Summerville and Pascal Struijk
Gakpo will be familiar with a few players in the Leeds squad. He won his one Eredivisie game up against Crysencio Summerville, but lost out on the two occasions he faced Pascal Struijk at under-19 level.
