Graham Smyth says Leeds United have a ‘luxury’ player that doesn’t fit into Daniel Farke’s side

There is genuine belief and hope that Leeds United have what it takes to obtain Premier League survival if Daniel Farke can bring in a couple of additions in the January window.

Gabi Gudmundsson, Jaka Bijol, Sean Longstaff, Noah Okafor, Lukas Nmecha, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have all shown they are good signings. But Leeds could still do with one or two in the attacking positions.

Plenty have been linked with a move to Leeds, most recently the likes of Man United’s Joshua Zirkzee, Sevilla’s Switzerland ace Ruben Vargas, and Chelsea’s English stars Raheem Sterling and Tyrique George.

Would you take Joshua Zirkzee at Leeds? ⭐

Even if he's currently at Man United?

But if Leeds are going to bring in players, the chances are they will have to make some sales. Perhaps one that will benefit PSR. It has been reported that Leeds will listen to offers for Willy Gnonto if it’s a profit.

Graham Smyth explains why Joel Piroe isn’t getting a game

Another player that Leeds could decide to sell if they want a PSR profit is Joel Piroe. He’s fallen down the pecking order despite his 19 Championship goals last season, last starting in the 5-0 loss to Arsenal.

Speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, Graham Smyth explains why Piroe hasn’t been starting for Leeds and it is because he believes Leeds’ £16m 2023 signing is a “luxury” that Leeds cannot afford.

“He’s had a frustrating season hasn’t he, for last season’s golden boot winner – he was so important. It’s what he adds when he’s not scoring goals, it’s always been the question mark,” Smyth said on Piroe.

“Can a newly-promoted team carry a bit more of a luxury. We know what he’s going to do when he gets a chance, but what is he doing when he’s not getting any chances? Is he adding enough?” Smyth added.

Joel Piroe will surely leave Leeds if January opportunity arises

Piroe is getting the odd few minutes off the bench, but he’s far from the first player Farke turns to and that is even with Lukas Nmecha injured. Ultimately, Smyth is right, Leeds cannot carry a player like Piroe.

Maybe next season, if Leeds stay up and improve the defence and midfield, Piroe could be the man to add some much-needed creativity. But if an offer comes in for Piroe next month, he will surely be sold.

Piroe has alerted his agents that a January move is likely and interest in players like Zirkzee would only push Piroe down the pecking order. It is two and a half years since Piroe signed a four-year Leeds deal.

Bought for £16m including add-ons, player amortisation means any offers over £6m would see Leeds garner a profit for the former Swansea City star. Whether they are willing to sell in January, is unclear.
