Leeds United are reportedly battling to sign Chelsea right-back Alfie Gilchrist on loan this summer and we spoke to Dom Toner at The Chelsea Chronicle about his potential arrival.
Leeds are expected to be after a new right-back and certainly a defender that can both right-back and centre-back, with Joe Rodon expected to return to Tottenham before joining a Premier League club.
Connor Roberts has returned to Burnley, Luke Ayling has joined Middlesbrough on a permanent basis, while Jamie Shackleton and Sam Byram are both out of contract at the end of the month at Elland Road.
If all four end up going, it would leave Leeds with only Archie Gray at right-back. But of course, the teen sensation is a central midfielder and his future is in the middle of the park under manager Daniel Farke.

“Very positive feeling. Gilchrist’s breakthrough from the academy to the first team was a rare thing to cheer. His passion whenever he stepped on the pitch meant he quickly won over the Chelsea fanbase.
“The way he wildly celebrated after scoring his first goal against Everton perfectly sums up his character. Gilchrist is an aggressive and front-footed defender, was a centre-back during his academy days.”
With Leeds needing additions at right-back and in the middle of the defence, the addition of Gilchrist on loan seems it makes sense. Leeds are not the only club keen, with Preston and Blackburn eyeing a move.
Leeds move a no-brainer for Gilchrist, Luke Ayling comparisons
We asked The Chelsea Chronicle’s Toner if he felt a move to Elland Road would benefit both Chelsea and Gilchrist, and he explained why the Chelsea talent’s passion and tenacity draw similarities to Ayling.
“I’d definitely prefer Gilchrist to join a Championship club, but the obvious criteria is he needs regular football for his development. If Leeds can give him that, a move to Elland Road could be a no-brainer.”
“He would get fully stuck into the Championship and wouldn’t shy away from the physicality. My guess is Leeds fans would see him in a similar mould to Luke Ayling. This switch does tick lots of boxes for me.”
Hopefully then for Leeds fans, The 49ers get a deal done for Gilchrist ahead of other second-tier clubs. Given the competition comes from Preston and Blackburn, you would have to say Leeds are favourites.
