Carlton Palmer thinks Leeds United will make move to sign free agent ahead of Paul Heckingbottom in next couple of months

Leeds United have already signed one free agent since the closure of the summer window in the form of Josuha Guilavogui, but one pundit reckons they will make a move for another.

Guilavogui has arrived at Elland Road to provide some much-needed cover in midfield and in defence. The 34-year-old was out of contract after leaving Mainz in the summer, and Guilavogui arrived at Leeds.

The seven-time France star has since made two appearances for Leeds, with Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev sidelined through injury. Meanwhile, Max Wober is fit again giving Leeds a full compliment in defence.

But Leeds might not be done there with Daniel Farke complaining on a number of occasions that he has a light squad. Perhaps then, the Whites could consider re-entering the transfer market for another freebie.

A long-term target at Leeds, Ryan Kent is without a club after his contract at Fenerbahce was mutually terminated. It sees him unable to play for a new club until January, but The Sun say Leeds want Kent.

The 27-year-old is a Europa League finalist, a proven winger in the Championship, Scotland and in the second-best European competition. On a free, he would be a super addition for a second-tier outfit.

Paul Heckingbottom wants Kent at Preston in a reunion between the two. Former Leeds man Carlton Palmer has told FLW that he can see Leeds moving for Kent, but thinks Preston is Kent’s better move.

“I can see Leeds moving for him big time in January, depending on their injury situation, who’s coming back. With clubs interested in him, you want to go to clubs near the top of their respective leagues.

“But also, from Ryan Kent’s point of view, he wants to play, so it might well be that teaming up with Paul Heckingbottom, going to Preston and being guaranteed playing week-in, week-out is a better option.”

The Liverpool academy product was the subject of interest from Leeds when The Whites finally gained promotion under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020. Then-Rangers boss Steven Gerrard confirmed a £10m offer.

But Kent remained, consistently linked with Leeds over the past few years. The fleet-footed assist machine then joined Fenerbahce in the summer of 2023, but it is a move that has failed with Leeds not bidding.

Whether or not interest remains in Kent from a Leeds perspective remains to be seen. But he is available, and Leeds could do with additions in the final third given a number of attackers have picked up injuries.
