Despite local denials from Smyth downplaying interest, widespread reports across the Daily Mail and Portuguese outlet A Bola confirmed that Leeds United made concrete moves for former Sporting CP star Hidemasa Morita.
According to A Bola on 21 July, Leeds held direct talks with the 31-year-old Japan international – a key performer in Sporting’s back-to-back Primeira Liga triumphs – and tabled a two-year contract offer with an option for a third year.
Morita left Sporting when his existing contract expired this summer to pursue his dream of playing in the Premier League, with the Paraag Marathe-led club expressing an interest.
Yet, after exploring the financial parameters and squad fit, Leeds United opted to walk away from the table, withdrawing their interest to direct resources elsewhere.
