The writing is on the wall for Wilfried Gnonto at Leeds United after Daniel Farke decision

Wilfried Gnonto’s time at Leeds United is running out, with the young Italian winger’s future at Elland Road looking increasingly uncertain. He was an unused sub against Chelsea.

Despite his impressive contributions last season in the Championship, Daniel Farke’s tactical evolution has left Gnonto on the outside looking in. So, what’s gone wrong for the once-promising starlet?

Gnonto is a fan favourite, lighting up Elland Road with his flair and knack for goal. With 23 goals under his belt since his arrival, you’d think he’d be a shoo-in for regular Premier League action.

But this season, he’s barely seen the pitch, clocking up just 349 minutes in the league. The writing looks like it is on the wall, with a return to Serie A football gathering momentum.

Farke’s tactical shake-up, shifting to a 3-5-2 formation, has been a revelation for the Whites. It’s a system that doesn’t quite fit Gnonto’s style, favouring two strikers and wing-backs over traditional wingers.

This change has seen Leeds flourish, losing only twice since December. The unfortunate reality is that Gnonto’s skill set just doesn’t align with the new approach, and Farke has moved on.

Farke’s faith in Buonanotte adds to Gnonto’s woes

The arrival of Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton has only compounded Gnonto’s troubles. The Argentine’s inclusion in the squad shows that Farke is looking elsewhere for a creative spark.

Both players share similar attributes, small stature, technical prowess, but Buonanotte’s ability to play centrally gives him the edge in Farke’s system.

It’s a tough pill for Gnonto to swallow. Despite his contributions last season, Farke’s decision to bring in Buonanotte reflects a lack of trust in the Italian’s ability to adapt to the Premier League’s demands.

Gnonto’s summer exit looking increasingly likely

With all signs pointing towards a summer departure, the question now is where Gnonto might end up. Leeds will likely enter the summer market for a new creative player on a permanent deal.

Gnonto’s exit could free up both funds and a roster spot for fresh talent. It’s a tough situation for a player who showed so much promise, but football waits for no one.

In January, Gnonto was linked with Fiorentina. But instead, the Serie A strugglers signed Jack Harrison on loan from Leeds while also adding Leeds’ promotion hero Manor Solomon, on loan from Tottenham.

Leeds fans will undoubtedly have mixed feelings about losing a player of Gnonto’s calibre. His moments of magic have been a joy to watch, but the harsh reality is that football is a results-driven business.

If we get offered £10m or more for Gnonto we have to sell, right? 🇮🇹

That money can be used on someone better suited to the 3-5-2 formation… 💰

Gnonto and Leeds: What’s Next?

As the summer window approaches, all eyes will be on Gnonto’s next move. Will he find a club that can utilise his talents more effectively, or will he adapt and fight for his place at Leeds?

Either way, it’s clear that his journey at Elland Road is nearing a crossroads. For Leeds, the focus will be on strengthening the squad to ensure they remain competitive in the Premier League.

The potential sale of Gnonto could provide the resources needed to bring in new talent, but losing a player of his potential is always a gamble. One thing’s for sure: the transfer drama is just beginning.
