Carlos Espi is reportedly the latest name to be added to Leeds United’s shortlist after the Spanish gem won La Liga’s Young Player of the Season award during 2025-26.
The Spanish wonderkid, 21, scored an impressive 13 goals in 27 appearances for Levante last season. Of those 13, 11 came in 25 La Liga appearances, and it has the whole of Europe keeping an eye on Espi.

Graham Smyth reported on Monday that Espi is admired at Leeds. While he is on Leeds’ list, the Whites are yet to make a move for the striker who boasts a bargain £21m release clause in his current contract.
Leeds are expected to make a move for a striker this summer, after failing to sign Jacob Strand Larsen in January. That is despite the presence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Lukas Nmecha and struggling Joel Piroe.
Leeds remain stubborn despite Piroe’s comments
With Calvert-Lewin first choice and Nmecha the clear pick over Piroe, any signing up top this summer will end Piroe’s hopes of game time. It comes days after Piroe said he wants to stay and fight for his place.
The £16m signing from Swansea failed to score or assist for Leeds in the Premier League last season, only managing two starts – the first two games of the season. From that point on, he only came off the bench.
Piroe has made it clear he would like to remain at Elland Road, but understands that he will learn more about his future in pre-season. He missed a penalty against Wrexham before opening Leeds’ account.
The interest in Espi proves that Leeds are looking to strengthen their front line without any care for Piroe and his future at Elland Road. Even if Leeds don’t sign Espi, the mere interest in him is bad news for Piroe.

Leeds went from possession-based, patient attacking, technically gifted football to old-school, set-piece kings last season. If they want to avoid second-season syndrome, they would be right to retain that tactic.

Espi fits that category. Calvert-Lewin is renowned for his leap and his ability in the air, but actually, per 90 minutes in their respective leagues last season, Espi won more of his aerial duels – at a rate of 56.1%.
Calvert-Lewin, however, was below 50%. It proves why Leeds want Espi aside from his Young Player of the Season award, his goals and his age. If Leeds can get him for £21m, it is a signal of intent and a real coup.
