Leeds United missed out on Jorgen Strand Larsen, but a smarter move is now clear. Liam Delap offers the same profile with a stronger upside and a £30m opportunity that must not be ignored.

As per many reports, Leeds missed out on Strand Larsen in January, confirming a clear intent to recruit a striker. That failure has carried into the summer window and leaves a gap that still needs to be addressed.

The profile they targeted is not in question, and the recruitment plan does not need to change. What does need to change is the name at the top of the list, with Strand Larsen since joining Crystal Palace.

And should Leeds give him one?

Delap matches Strand Larsen’s Premier League output, but better

Strand Larsen has delivered 18 goals and five assists in 65 Premier League games, four goals and one assist in 2,083 minutes this season. Those are solid numbers, but they do not separate him from the pack.

Delap produced 12 goals and two assists in 37 Premier League games for Ipswich in a struggling side. That return is comparable on a per-game basis and suggests a higher ceiling given the team context.

Chelsea moved quickly to secure Delap on a long-term deal and paid a £30m fee, but he has not been used consistently. He has managed one goal in 1,008 Premier League minutes, hardly given a chance.

Those numbers reflect opportunity rather than ability, and they create a window for other clubs. As Ben Jacobs has stated on Give Me Sport, Newcastle want Delap and prefer him to Chelsea’s Nico Jackson.

“My information is that the player would like to stay and fight for his place. There is interest in Liam Delap, particularly, I’m told, from Newcastle United, who will add another striker this summer.”

Delap’s Ipswich profile mirrors the Calvert-Lewin model

Delap’s role at Ipswich was clear and effective, operating as a central focal point with direct responsibility. That profile aligns with an established Premier League striker model built on physicality and direct play.

Leeds targeted that exact profile in January and there is no reason to shift away from it now. Delap has already delivered within that structure at Premier League level, proving he can do it if given the stage.

Leeds do not need to rethink their strategy after missing out on Strand Larsen, they need to execute it more effectively. Delap offers comparable production, and Premier League output in a weaker side.

Possibly available at a defined £30m fee, Leeds have got to move with Newcastle already positioning themselves. The decision is straightforward and time-sensitive and Leeds cannot miss out.
