Leeds cannot sit back as Wolves open talks with Matheus Cunha – opinion

While the signs were more promising just before the World Cup break, there is absolutely no question that Leeds United must strengthen in January – in a number of areas.

The Whites are in a precarious position in the Premier League, two points above the bottom three. And there are a couple of glaring holes in the squad which must be filled next month.

Patrick Bamford has struggled with injury once again. Meanwhile, Pascal Struijk has done excellently at left-back. But that is not his natural role. And there have been times where that has become apparent.

And there is a big difference to how the table looked last season – as is now becoming apparent in the rumour mill.

Wolves in talks with Cunha as they eye three signings – Leeds have had their warning

Last year, we had the likes of Norwich, Watford and Burnley all below us after we had played our 14th game of the campaign.

This time however, the five teams below us are West Ham, Everton, Nottingham Forest, Southampton and Wolves.

Admittedly, neither Everton or Southampton are likely to be big spenders unless they make a big sale. But the Saints have a new manager through the door, and he will want some of his own additions.

Meanwhile, Forest overhauled their squad over the summer. So they may well be prepared to spend further to boost their hopes of securing a second year in the top-flight.

And of course, West Ham should not be down in the doldrums.

But it is the reports concerning Wolves over the last few days that arguably send the clearest warning to Leeds.

According to the Express and Star, Julen Lopetegui’s men are in talks to sign both Matheus Cunha and Felipe from Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, Mundo Deportivo reported that they want Real Madrid defender Nacho.

Neither Felipe or Nacho have been regular starters this season. Meanwhile, Cunha has had a poor time since his £26 million move from Hertha Berlin.

Nevertheless, Wolves have identified the areas which are particularly concerning. And they are seemingly ready to back the manager with some big moves.

The worry for this particular Leeds fan is that there does not appear to be three clear candidates for relegation. But Wolves had arguably been the most underwhelming side so far. So if they make big moves in January, all bets are off.

So forget the wins against Liverpool and Bournemouth, Victor Orta. We have had our warning and we simply cannot afford to relax in January.
