Willy Gnonto shares honest insight into what it is like working with Leeds manager

Willy Gnonto has told Leeds United’s site he loves working under Jesse Marsch and while he has to stick with the Leeds manager’s “plan”, the American still gives him freedom. This, after Marsch snapped at Gnonto in training this week.

Gnonto, 19, has only managed four appearances for Leeds since joining the club on deadline day from Zurich. That is, despite being a fully-fledged Italy international. The pocket-sized powerhouse has only started once, against Spurs.

But it was his substitute appearances against Liverpool and Bournemouth, and his involvement in the winners, that have seen Gnonto earn praise. The demands placed on him have increased and that has been apparent in training.

Indeed, Gnonto skinned a couple of players before setting up Cody Drameh to score in training this week. The Leeds squad are in Spain on a warm-weather camp, facing Elche. Then, they return home to play Real Sociedad and Monaco.

However, Marsch snapped at him – the Yorkshire Evening Post writing that Gnonto was ‘chided’ by the American gaffer for his positioning. Gnonto spoke to the Leeds website about his manager and is desperate to impress Marsch.

“Jesse has his mentality, has his plan and he tries to do it on the pitch. But we are still free to do what we have to do. I just want to do what the coach tells me. Every time I just ask questions to know what I have to do. It’s easier for me.”

With Jack Harrison fit again, Luis Sinisterra returning from injury and Crysencio Summerville in excellent form – Gnonto has his work cut out to start when Leeds return against Manchester City on December 28. But he has an opportunity.

With Sinisterra still working on a return, Gnonto will be hoping to start tonight in a friendly against Elche. If he can catch the eye of Marsch for all the right reasons over the next few weeks, then he might get a chance against City.

As things stand, though, you would expect a fit Sinisterra to combine with Summerville and if not, Harrison to start on the left. A lot can happen between now and City, with three friendlies to play for Marsch’s men.
