Mateo Joseph got his name on the score sheet for England’s Elite Squad on Monday night during a late 3-2 win over Germany and he posted on Instagram, prompting reaction from Willy Gnonto.
Joseph, 20, won his tenth cap for England’s U20 side – who have been renamed the Elite Squad. He nabbed his third goal to equalise and make it 1-1 in the first half. A gorgeous little flick into the corner.
An England side that also boasted Darko Gyabi. Archie Gray was with England’s U20 side, but the YEP report that Leeds struck a deal with England that would see Gray return to Elland Road before the game.
Southampton man Samuel Edozie also scored to make it 2-2 after Germany went ahead 2-1, before Heerenveen’s Charlie Webster made it 3-2 to England – despite Reading’s Nelson Abbey being sent off.
Joseph posted on Instagram to underline his delight at England’s 3-2 win over the Germans. The win was England’s first win of the Elite League series, after losses to Italy, Portugal and Romania.

Like Gneonto, it has been a frustrating season for Joseph. Injury on the horizon of the Championship campaign, after featuring regularly in pre-season, affected Joseph’s chances of breaking into the side.
He has failed to make a single senior appearance this season, managing to be a part of the senior match day squad on just two occasions. Home games against Sheffield Wednesday, and the win over Watford.
Perhaps, his goal on England duty will serve as a fresh reminder to Daniel Farke ahead of Friday’s clash against Rotherham United. Gnonto reacted, with a message that is translated as “go ahead”.
