Willy Gnonto has told the Premier League’s official YouTube channel that playing at Elland Road is incredible, admitting that playing for Leeds United makes him so proud.
Gnonto has taken little time to make himself a fan favourite. The Italian was signed right at the end of the summer transfer window as the Whites desperately tried to sign an attacker before the deadline.
Expectations were low initially. And Jesse Marsch did take his time to introduce him into the side. Ultimately however, it was probably Gnonto who kept the American in the job for as long as he was.
Gnonto so proud to play for Leeds
Certainly, in the latter stages of his tenure, Gnonto was one of the only positives. And while his form dipped more recently, he does appear to be getting back to his best.
The Italy international set up one goal in the weekend win at Wolves. And he was unplayable at times at Molineux.
He is a player supporters absolutely love. His reaction to Luke Ayling’s celebration was as pleasing as the celebration itself. And there was a brilliant moment with Rasmus Kristensen as the pair headed down the tunnel at full-time.
Gnonto has been asked about what it is like to walk out at Elland Road.
“It’s incredible,” he told the Premier League’s YouTube channel. “Also, in training, I just can’t wait to play at home in front of the fans. It’s just something that makes me really proud, and my family as well in the stands. I enjoy every moment at home, away as well because they just come with us every time.”
Hopefully, Gnonto will continue playing at Elland Road for some time yet. Of course, we have to be realistic about our chances of keeping him. But he is still developing and perfecting his game.
So as long as we can provide him a top-flight stage, there is surely a chance that he will be content to stick around for a little while longer.
The love that he clearly feels from the fans will only help.
