Former Leeds United forward Jay Roy Grot looks set for a shock place at the World Cup after playing his part in a famous victory for Suriname.

Jay Roy Grot scored his first career hat-trick recently and now looks like he could be heading to the World Cup, having found his feet in his career.

Victor Orta brought the powerful forward to Leeds in the summer of 2017, and he played 23 times in his first Championship season, scoring just one goal.

However, Marcelo Bielsa deemed that the forward was surplus to requirements at Leeds, and Grot eventually left the club on a permanent basis in 2021.

Now, having settled at Danish side Odense Boldklub, Grot could be heading for the World Cup, having played a part in Suriname’s 4-0 victory against El Salvador.

Former Leeds United forward Jay Roy Grot impresses with Suriname

Grot recently switched allegiance from the Netherlands to Suriname and made his international debut in October in a 1-1 draw with Guatemala.

However, he enjoyed more success in his second appearance, coming off the bench in a thumping 4-0 victory.

Despite only playing 19 minutes of the game, Grot managed to register a late assist, finding space in the box before teeing up Dhoraso Klas for the fourth and final goal of the game.

FotMob gave Grot a rating of 7.4 for his impressive cameo from the bench, as the world’s 126th-ranked nation took another step towards qualifying for the World Cup.

One-time Leeds United man one game away from World Cup glory

Few would have imagined that Grot would go on to play at a World Cup during his time at Elland Road, as he struggled to make an impact under Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom.

However, having switched international allegiance, he now stands on the brink of taking part in the tournament in the summer.

Suriname top their qualifying group with nine points from five games played so far. They are level on points with Panama, but their goal difference is now superior, thanks to their goalfest against El Salvador.

As a result, a win over Guatemala in their final qualifier will see Suriname and Grot book their place at the global showcase in North America this summer.
