Leeds United’s eighth signing of the summer is reportedly incoming but will he be eligible to play in their Premier League opener?

With Lucas Perri being Leeds’ last signing of the window, almost three weeks ago, fans will be happy to see some movement and a potential striker.

After missing out on Igor Paixao, with Paixao eventually joining Marseille, Leeds remain interested in Rodrigo Muniz at Fulham, but with the season about to begin, action has been required.

That has resulted in the Yorkshire club reportedly signing free agent and England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Leeds United have a deadline to register Dominic Calvert-Lewin before Everton clash

David Ornstein reports on The Athletic’s website that Leeds have now agreed a move to sign the striker, after he confirmed he was leaving Everton on a free. A medical for Calvert-Lewin is deemed ‘imminent’.

Calvert-Lewin has been loosely linked with Leeds for much of the summer, with his Everton deal expiring at the end of last season. He is a proven Premier League goalscorer, but is also renowned for his injuries.

The Whites will be keen to have him start against his former club on Monday, but will he be eligible to play?

Based on the current rules, to have a player eligible to play in a match, their registration with the league must be completed by a specific deadline.

For weekend matches (including those on a Monday), the deadline is typically 12:00 PM (midday) on the working day before the match.

Since the match is on a Monday, the deadline would be 12:00 PM on the preceding Friday. If all the necessary paperwork, including the contract and league registration forms, are submitted and approved by this time, Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be eligible to play.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s previous Premier League records

Dominic Calvert-Lewin brings a notable Premier League record to Leeds United, having tallied 57 goals and 15 assists in 239 matches.

His most impressive season was 2020-21, where he scored 16 goals in 33 appearances and secured his first Premier League hat-trick.

That year, he was Everton’s top scorer with 21 goals across all competitions and was named the club’s Player of the Year, showcasing his aerial prowess and relentless work rate.

While his arrival may not be the marquee signing some Leeds fans had hoped for, he arrives at a crucial time for a team in desperate need of a proven number nine.

The expectation is that Calvert-Lewin will hit the ground running, especially with a potential debut against his former club, Everton, on Monday.

This compelling storyline could provide the perfect motivation for him to deliver immediately and become the prolific goalscorer the club so desperately requires.
