Darts star Luke Humphries is the favourite to lift his first ever World Darts Championship in the coming weeks, but where does his support of Leeds United originate from?
Humphries has the weight of expectation from across the entire world of darts on his shoulders heading into the biggest event of the year, as he enters the tournament in relentless form.
Having not won a single major across his career until October, Humphries now has three under his belt thanks to an incredible run of form that has seen him sweep aside everyone in his path.
His first major title came at the World Grand Prix in October as he defeated Gerwyn Price, before then beating Rob Cross in the Grand Slam of Darts. He also got the better of Michael van Gerwen in the Players Championship Finals.
Humphries has done a couple of media events at Leeds in recent times, and so with that in mind, let’s have a look at why he is a supporter of the club.
Why is Darts player Luke Humphries a Leeds fan?
Humphries was actually born in Newbury, Berkshire, which is a place in the South East of England, several miles away from Elland Road.
However, his support of the club actually originates from his Dad. According to Humphries, his name Luke stands for (L)eeds (U)nited (K)ings of (E)urope, having had it ingrained in him from ‘birth’.
Once the World Championships are over, Humphries is set to fulfil his dream of walking out in Leeds for the Premier League darts that take place in the first half of next year.
In an interview with leedsunited.com, he has hinted that he will – for one night only – walk out to Marching on Together, with a special shirt also planned.
Before that, though, his focus will very much be on becoming just the 12th world darts champion, with the tournament getting underway tomorrow on Friday 15 December.
