Ian Poveda made his debut for Colombia on Sunday in a 1-0 victory over Venezuela and the Leeds United star has earned praise in South America – coined the ‘new promise’ of this Colombia side.
Poveda, 23, has only managed six Championship appearances for Leeds under Daniel Farke this season. Five of which has come from the bench. He has failed to start since the 1-0 loss to Birmingham City.
Perhaps why, Farke allowed him to travel to Colombia and play for his country against Venezuela and then Mexico this month. Not officially an international break, the Colombia squad is a bit of a B-team.
Indeed, players that have finished their season – those in the MLS, for example. Or, players that are not needed or playing much at their club. Poveda fits into that category. He started for Colombia on Sunday.

Infobae reports: “An alternate roster, without any players from the traditional team, as an experiment for the Argentine coach to discover new talents. some names stood out, including attacker Ian Poveda.
“He ended up being quite popular among the Tricolor fans, who gave him a seal of approval so he would be included in future calls for more important games. He was one of the team’s most outstanding.”
Poveda did enough to show manager Nestor Lorenzo that he deserves a spot in the Colombia side, in the future. What Poveda needs to rubber stamp that Colombia spot, is regular game time at club level.
He is not getting that at Leeds and it might be to keep his Colombia hopes alive, Poveda needs to leave Leeds in January or next summer, and find himself a club where he can play week in, week out.
