There was a recognisable face coming off the bench for Coventry City on Wednesday night as Matt Grimes made his debut for Frank Lampard’s side against one of old clubs, Leeds United.

Almost a decade ago, a young Matt Grimes joined Leeds on loan from Swansea. Garry Monk using his connections with the Welsh club to bring the midfielder to Elland Road on loan for the 2016-17 season.

But Grimes struggled at Leeds, managing just 12 appearances. Grimes did little for Leeds and it wasn’t helped when his Mum described Leeds supporters as “horrid fans” on Facebook following his loan failure.

Despite struggling at Leeds, Grimes has since become a Swansea legend. The midfielder clocked up 333 appearances for the Welsh side and has captained them for the last few years, before joining Coventry.

Matt Grimes shares his thoughts on Leeds and their club’s fans

Having become so ingrained at Swansea, it came as a surprise when Coventry and Frank Lampard came in for Grimes. Spending £3.5m to land the Swansea skipper, Grimes made his debut on Wednesday night.

Typically, against his old club. The midfielder played for the last 30 minutes and looked assured on the ball even if Leeds should have scored more than their two goals, and Grimes spoke after Leeds’ 2-0 win.

He gave his verdict on Leeds to Coventry’s YouTube channel: “Leeds are a top team, that’s the level we want to get to. In my opinion, they’re the best team in the league. Yeah, chucked right in at the deep end.

“Loved it, the atmosphere before the game was incredible, both sets of fans were excellent and created a great atmosphere. A tough game to make my debut in but a brilliant one,” Grimes added after full-time.

How does the Championship table look as Leeds secure win?

Jayden Bogle and Joel Piroe got their names on the score sheet again, as Leeds secured a 2-0 win but really, The Whites could have scored as many as they did against Cardiff. Leeds were largely wasteful.

But a win is a win, Leeds go 14 unbeaten with a sixth consecutive clean sheet and sit five points clear of both Burnley and Sheffield United. The Blades and Sunderland have a game in hand, on the weekend.

That is because Leeds and Burnley are in FA Cup action. The Whites play host to Millwall in the fourth round of the Cup, before travelling to Watford next Tuesday with 15 Championship matches left to play.
