Leeds United supporters sang at Georginio Rutter during Sunday’s late 1-0 win over Brighton as the Frenchman made his first return to Elland Road since leaving in a £40m move last summer.

Completely against the run of play, Leeds scored a late winner to beat Brighton at Elland Road thanks to a header from Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Rutter and his Brighton side, meanwhile, suffered a painful defeat.

Graham Smyth posted that Leeds fans were singing at Rutter while the Brighton forward warmed up during the first half before coming on after 65 minutes. The loss hampers Brighton’s Europe hopes.

“22 – Very charitable of the Kop and West Stand to sing Rutter’s name as he warms up for Brighton,” Smyth posted on X during the game, as Leeds held on to secure a point against a strong Brighton side.

Leeds supporters gave Georginio Rutter warm reception

The reaction stood out given Rutter left Leeds for Brighton after helping Daniel Farke’s side reach the Championship play-off final during the 2023-24 season. He first played against Leeds earlier this season, where Rutter registered an assist.

Despite playing against his former club, Rutter still applauded Leeds supporters after the final whistle at the Amex Stadium. The response from Elland Road on Sunday suggested many supporters still view him positively.

Rutter endured difficult Leeds start before becoming favourite

Rutter joined Leeds during the Premier League relegation battle in January 2023 and initially struggled to justify his club-record transfer fee. He failed to score during the second half of the 2022-23 campaign as Leeds were relegated to the Championship.

The forward transformed his reputation under Farke during the following season by becoming one of Leeds’ most important attacking players. Rutter finished his Leeds career with eight goals and 18 assists in 66 appearances after emerging as a fan favourite during the 2023-24 season.

Brighton move brought Rutter back to the Premier League

Brighton moved quickly to sign Rutter in summer 2024 after Leeds missed out on promotion. The £40m transfer gave the 23-year-old another opportunity in the Premier League.

Rutter has contributed goals and assists for Brighton during his first season at the club while regularly featuring under Fabian Hurzeler. He also maintained links with Leeds after leaving by posting a picture with Daniel Farke on Instagram following Brighton’s win over Leeds earlier this season.

Rutter’s Leeds comments explain Elland Road response

Rutter recently spoke positively about Leeds and Farke’s current side when discussing his former club. In comments shared earlier this season, he said Leeds “deserve” to be at the top because of the quality within the squad.

The Frenchman also praised the atmosphere around the club and admitted he still watches Leeds closely following his departure. Those comments, combined with his performances during the Championship campaign, help explain why Elland Road supporters chose to serenade him rather than criticise him on his return.

Leeds supporters could easily have reacted differently toward a player sold to a Premier League club for £40m. Instead, Sunday’s chants showed how strongly many fans still regard Rutter after his role in one of the club’s most entertaining Championship sides in recent years.
