Leeds United take on Southampton on Saturday away from home, after both sides were relegated from the top tier. 20 years ago, both did battle in August 2023 – a season which also saw Leeds go down.

Financial issues saw Leeds relegated during the 2003-04 season while Southampton finished in a much safer 12th place. In August 2023 it ended 0-0, but what happened to the Leeds players from that day?

What happened to Leeds side, drew with Southampton in 2003

Paul Robinson

Robinson left Leeds at the end of that season after relegation and went on to have a wonderful career with Tottenham, Blackburn and Burnley – winning 41 England caps. He is a now a pundit on Sky Sports.

Gary Kelly

Kelly remained a one-club man, sticking with Leeds after relegation and ending on a huge 532 outings for the club, the club’s eight-most – retiring in 2007. Opened a gym in Drogheda in 2016 with his family.

Zoumana Camara

Camara was on loan from PSG for the 03-04 season, playing just 13 times in the league. But, he went on to play more than 150 league games in eight years at PSG, retiring in 2015. Now PSG Under-19’s coach.

Dom Matteo

Like Robinson, Matteo left Leeds in 2004 after relegation. He has since embarked in a punditry role, and ambassadorial duties with Leeds from 2013. He underwent a successful op on a brain tumour in 2019.

Ian Harte

Harte left Leeds in 2004 to join Levante – and returned to England with the likes of Reading, Sunderland and Bournemouth. These days, he has become an agent. He represents a lot of Leeds’ younger stars.

Jermaine Pennant

Renowned for being a bit of a bad boy, Pennant played for 15 clubs throughout his career. Spain, India, England – ending at Billericay. Since entered reality TV. Big Brother, Celebs Go Dating and most recently, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares wins – where in the latest episode, he is seen fighting Matt Hancock. Superb.

Jody Morris

Brief stint at Leeds which lasted 12 league games. Career curtailed early by injury despite a promising spell in Scotland. Has managed at youth level with Chelsea, but sacked by Swindon after just 18 games.

Seth Johnson

The player Leeds fans think of, when asked about Peter Ridsdale’s ill-fated spell as chairman. Just 54 league games in four years, he returned to Derby in 2005. His contract, cancelled. Tried scouting.

Lamine Sakho

A pub quiz favourite, Sakho was the first Senegalese player to play for Leeds. Followed by El Hadji-Diouf, Amdy Faye and Souleymane Doukara. Struggled in France, after Leeds. Tricky one to find.

Alan Smith

Still a bit of a marmite figure, after his move to them. Went on to Newcastle, then MK Dons and Notts County – where he did some coaching. Lives in Florida, a coach in the XL Soccer World Academy.

Mark Viduka

Our iconic, big striker. The Aussie also left the club after relegation, going to Boro and Newcastle. Now, he runs a small coffee shop in Zagreb – and plays the guitar in his son’s band. Often giving interviews.

Subs:

David Batty

A Leeds legend, Batty is living a low-key retirement in Yorkshire. He has done a lot for charity, playing in football matches for good causes and is even one of those to raise awareness against prostate cancer.

Frazer Richardson

Richardsson went on to play for a number of Championship clubs including Boro, Southampton and Charlton before retiring in 2016. At one stage, was our longest-serving player, in 2008 after Gary Kelly.

Jason Wilcox

Quite an interesting one. Wilcox entered youth coaching with Manchester City before going upstairs, where he has since joined Southampton – Saturday’s opponents – as their director of football. Strange.

Nigel Martyn

The goalie is living down south and has spoke to us at LeedsUnited.News as a pundit, on numerous occasions. Martyn is enjoying his cricket, after 273 games for the Whites before joining Everton.

Aaron Lennon

The winger had only just turned 16 at this stage – only just retiring in 2022. Enjoyed a wonderful career at Tottenham, Everton and Burnley. Has openly spoke about troubles with mental health and suicide.
