Daniel Farke confirmed this week that Joe Gelhardt has suffered a hand fracture and may need to have an operation to correct the issue – and Ben Parker has reacted to the news on Thursday’s LS11.
Gelhardt, 21, had struggled to get into the side over the last few weeks – failing to be a part of the squad in the last three games. Indeed, prior to that, he had remained an unused sub in six of seven matches.
It comes after starting two of our first four Championship matches. But, he failed to catch Daniel Farke’s eye and his grasp on a place in the side is starting to lose grip. A January loan could be on the cards.
Speaking on Wednesday, Farke said that Gelhardt had suffered a hand fracture in training and there is a chance he may have to have surgery – a decision will only be made after Gelhardt is assessed further.
Responding to the news that Gelhardt had picked up the unusual injury, ex-Leeds defender Parker gave his take. He said that Leeds need to be “patient” with the striker, describing Gelhardt as a “great talent”.
“He’s not featured in the matchday squad for a couple of games now. Whether that is something to do with it, or just competition for places. 12 months ago, he was our starting striker in the Premier League.
“It shows how far we have come squad wise. I love Joffy, he’s a great talent but we have to be patient for him to get back in, but hope he gets back in quick after his surgery,” Parker said on Thursday’s LS11.

Gelhardt is a huge talent. His form in the U21 side soon after joining Leeds made the club think they had a special talent on their hands. But confidence seems to be lacking for him, after a loan at Sunderland.
Gelhardt only managed three goals in 20 games on loan at Sunderland – the same amount of goals he has in 48 senior Leeds outings. He needs a loan to a club where he’s given the platform to go and shine.
