Leeds United came up short again on Saturday afternoon, even though Daniel Farke’s side deserved far more against Tottenham Hotspur, with Leeds creating chances but failing to put them away.
The early concerns about Leeds struggling to create chances or scoring goals from open play have been put to bed with six goals arriving in their last three games. Four of those six have come from open play.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Noah Okafor, Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff have all opened their accounts, while Joe Rodon has his first Premier League goal and then hit the post on Saturday against Spurs.
Leeds had plenty of chances and on another day, could have scored three or four. Calvert-Lewin blazed over in the first half and then saw an effort saved by Guglielmo Vicario in the second 45, to go 2-1 up.

Wayne Rooney makes Dominic Calvert-Lewin prediction
According to FotMob, Calvert-Lewin had the second-highest XG+XA of any player, second only to Noah Okafor who of course, was left with a tap-in after Brenden Aaronson’s shot was parried by Vicario.
The striker should have hit the back of the net once, and could have had an assist when nodding to Joel Piroe. The substitute instinctively struck towards goal in injury time, only for Vicario to save Spurs again.
| Name | Club | XG+XA (Expected goals and expected assists) |
| Noah Okafor | Leeds | 0.81 |
| Dominic Calvert-Lewin | Leeds | 0.47 |
| Sean Longstaff | Leeds | 0.42 |
| Mohammed Kudus | Tottenham | 0.31 |
| Pascal Struijk | Leeds | 0.31 |
On Match of the Day, Rooney discussed his old Everton teammate’s performance and whether he would end up being a good signing for Leeds over the course of the season, highlighting his injury concerns.
“We all know Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a very good player. The biggest issue has been keeping him fit. He’s started his career at Leeds well, he’s getting chances. If he stays fit, he’s a handful for any defender.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s XG compared to his actual return rate
Obviously, Calvert-Lewin only has the one goal so far. The match sharpness is returning and with every outing, the striker’s resilience against injury improves. Leeds do look like they have themselves a bargain.
It was a risk, but it looks as if it is paying off, even if Calvert-Lewin’s actual goal return is far below his XG so far this season. The striker has missed huge chances against Bournemouth and Sheffield Wednesday.
Calvert-Lewin form in all competitions:
| Games (starts) | Minutes | Shots (OT) | Goals | Assists | XG |
| 6 (4) | 389 | 13 (8) | 1 | 0 | 2.78 |
Clearly, Calvert-Lewin should have more than one goal. The striker himself will feel he should have scored at least four or five by now. Perhaps, the 11-time England man just needs to get himself into a run, first.
