Leeds United have now announced their first signing of the summer in the form of Lukas Nmecha, with the Germany international joining the club on a free from Wolfsburg.

The 26-year-old striker has joined Leeds on a two-year deal until the summer of 2027, without costing The Whites a penny. His contract with Wolfsburg will expire at the end of the month, on June 30.

Nmecha brings with him a wealth of experience having come through the ranks at Man City and after three appearances, enjoyed loans with Preston, Middlesbrough, Wolfsburg and then Anderlecht.

After his 21 goals in 42 at Anderlecht, he returned to Wolfsburg permanently and has remained for the last four seasons – playing 85 times, scoring 19 goals and laying on four assists. Now, he’s joined Leeds.

What Pep Guardiola has said about new Leeds ace Nmecha

Guardiola actually handed Nmecha his professional debut in December 2017 with Man City, and then his Premier League debut. Nmecha only played three times for Man City, but they all came under Guardiola.

Guardiola eventually allowed Nmecha to leave Man City for Wolfsburg having loaned him out on four separate occasions, but knew he would amount to something special eventually – even if it wasn’t City.

As per the Bundesliga website, Guardiola’s verdict on Nmecha is quoted having handed the striker his professional debut back: “Lukas has great prospects. He’s hungry, he takes in everything you tell him.”

Vincent Kompany signed Nmecha while Anderlecht manager

Having first encountered a young Nmecha during his playing days as captain of Man City, Vincent Kompany – now manager of Bayern Munich – signed Nmecha on loan in the summer of 2020.

Under Kompany’s guidance, Nmecha blasted 21 goals in 41 games for Anderlecht, a season which remains Nmecha’s best goalscoring season in 2020-21. Kompany predicted he would start for a top team.

“He works really hard for the team. He is already a quite complete striker. He does not have any obvious weaknesses. He is one of the best strikers in Belgium. In time, he will lead for a top European team.”

Things might not have gone to plan so far, but at the age of 26, there is plenty of time to turn it around and meet Kompany’s prediction if he scores goals for Leeds. The Whites are still looking for a striker.
