Brenden Aaronson has suffered an indifferent start to 2023-24 but in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the on-loan Leeds United man scored a free-kick for USA in his country’s 4-0 win over Oman.
The 22-year-old has endured a tumultuous 15 months in which he has joined Leeds for big money in the Premier League – only to really struggle. He played 40 times, but the club were relegated last season.
A move to Union Berlin on loan sees him return to the Champions League – but he has not gone without criticism from Leeds fans. This season, he has already been sent off in his third outing for Union Berlin.
But one thing that has remained a constant for Aaronson throughout is playing for his country. In the early hours of Wednesday, Aaronson scored his country’s second of four with a free-kick from 25 yards.
It sounds spectacular. It wasn’t. His low effort did beat the wall but it was straight at Oman goalkeeper Ibrahim Al Mukhaini, who seemed dumbfounded by the set-piece – as it flew into the back of the net.

In what was his 34th cap for his country already, The Medford Messi scored his seventh goal. For the player, hopefully it gives him as bit of confidence to kick on this season – something Leeds will want.
Either, he kicks on and shows Leeds what he is capable of but more likely – a good year in Germany will see his value increase and see clubs become interested in signing Aaronson from Leeds next summer.
