Brenden Aaronson pulled on the Union Berlin shirt and scored on his debut after joining on loan from Leeds United on Saturday, and a video of his effort has emerged on Twitter – during a 3-2 defeat to Hungarian side Zalaegerszeg.

Aaronson, 22, was Jesse Marsch’s first signing last summer – reuniting with the American gaffer having worked side by side at Salzburg. He played 40 times for Leeds last season, managing a poor four goals and assists throughout.

Arguably, his figures would have been higher had the likes of Patrick Bamford converted more of the chances he actually created. But, after relegation, the USA skipper has decided to leave on loan – without an option to buy him.

He joins an Union Berlin side that have qualified for the Champions League. His agent deserves a pat on the back, getting him into a club fighting in the biggest European competition – just a month or two after suffering relegation.

On Saturday, he came on after 58 minutes to play for the first time as an Union Berlin player against Hungarian side Zalaegerszeg – with Union suffering a 3-2 loss. But Aaronson did score his side’s second. Here is his goal below.

It is a lovely goal from Aaronson. Forgetting the opposition, it is a sight that Leeds fans had hoped they might have seen more from Aaronson. Taking the ball from deep, he drove at the Hungarian side’s defence – before scoring.

A neat finish into the bottom corner with his weaker foot. Aaronson had hardly had a break this summer after USA duty, but he is clearly sharp. It is a good start for the Leeds man, who does not have an option in his temporary deal.
