Victor Orta could be reunited with Javi Gracia following their brief time together at Leeds United, with Sevilla making contact with the 53-year-old manager.

Javi Gracia has not yet taken another job since leaving Leeds towards the end of last season. Of course, his brief tenure came to an end after the humiliating 4-1 defeat away at Bournemouth.

The game also proved to be the final straw for Victor Orta. His departure was actually announced before that of Gracia as Leeds closed in on turning to Sam Allardyce for the final four games of a miserable campaign.

Orta ended up being appointed as Sevilla’s director of football. And after parting company with Diego Alonso this weekend, AS in Spain reports that Orta has already been in contact with both Gracia and Quique Sanchez Flores.

Life in Andalusia has not started well for Orta. Sevilla are only outside of the relegation zone in La Liga on goal difference. And they have not won in any competition other than the Copa del Rey since September.

Unsurprisingly therefore, they finished bottom of their Champions League group. And Alonso has been removed after a 3-0 loss at home to Getafe on Saturday.

Chance for manager to prove a point after brief Elland Road tenure?

Orta will be desperate for his spell at Sevilla to work out. And thus, the next appointment appears to be particularly critical. So it will be interesting to see if it is Gracia who gets the role, and whether he can succeed where he failed at Leeds.

In fairness, Gracia appeared to be popular with some of the players, actually remaining in contact with Patrick Bamford. And Leeds fans were optimistic when his tenure started with a handful of positive results. He won three of his first six league games in charge.

But the last of those – against Nottingham Forest in early April – would be our last win of the campaign altogether.

And after the Bournemouth game, Leeds unfortunately simply had to roll the dice.

Perhaps history would have been slightly different had Jesse Marsch been sacked sooner and Gracia had been given more time.

So it will be intriguing to see what happens if Orta and Gracia are now reunited at Sevilla with more than enough time left to turn their campaign around.
