‘Very good money’: Bundesliga clubs made big money offers for one Leeds player

Graham Smyth has told the YEP’s Inside Elland Road podcast that Georginio Rutter was the subject of offers from Bundesliga clubs worth “very good money” – but Rutter chose to stay at Leeds United.

Rutter, 21, has sbeen sensational for Leeds so far this season. He has had a hand in seven goals for Daniel Farke’s side in 13 Championship games – but it is often Rutter starting the moves from deep.

Take the winner at Norwich – his pass from inside his own penalty area to Cree Summerville. Similarly, for the opener against Huddersfield – setting Summerville free on the left, who then found Dan James.

But of course, Rutter is a player that is well-renowned around Europe for being an incredible talent. After the initial six months at Leeds, many might have understood if he decided to leave Leeds in the summer.

But Smyth explains that even despite offers to go back to Germany and the Bundesliga, having signed for Leeds from Hoffenheim, he chose to remain. That is, even with those clubs offering big money.

“You have Rutter, who could not really have been blamed for saying, ‘Actually my four months at Leeds were quite enough thanks you, I’m out of here.’ Yet there was nothing at all. He had options as well.

“There were Bundesliga clubs who were offering very good money to Leeds for him, and a decision was taken collectively that he would stay at Leeds, and look where we are now,” Smyth said this week.

Now, a fan favourite. Football can change quickly and Rutter has quickly become the darling of Leeds fans, after his signing was so heavily criticised during the second half of last season. He is on fire.

His arrival at Leeds is hardly his fault. Victor Orta brought him in. In January, though, Leeds needed a player that was going to have an instant impact. In the Premier League, he was never going to do that.

Unable to speak the language, still young, never playing in England before and joining a side embroiled in a relegation scrap? Not Rutter’s fault. But, he has taken it on the chin. Now, a key weapon for Leeds.
