Jaidon Anthony thought he had scored his second goal for Leeds United but the linesman’s flag ruled it out in the final few minutes of play at Rotherham United – and Jon Newsome has had his say.
Crysencio Summerville’s opener looked to have put Leeds in good stead at The New York Stadium, with the Dutchman curling in his seventh of the season. However, Leeds failed to capitalise on dominance.
Rotherham pulled back an equaliser in first-half injury time – Hakeem Odoffin finishing superbly past Illan Meslier. The second half was much more open, Rotherham having a number of chances to score.
Leeds, too. In the dying moments, it looked as if three substitutes had combined. Willy Gnonto crossing the ball, Patrick Bamford getting a touch and Anthony lashing the loose ball into the back of the net.
However, the linesman flagged for offside immediately and Anthony‘s goal was ruled out – what would have been his second for the club, after netting in a 3-0 home win against Watford earlier this season.
Jon Newsome verdict on Leeds United’s disallowed goal
Replays showed that the linesman gave the decision of offside against Bamford, the striker looking pretty level with a Rotherham defender as he touched it on to Anthony. VAR, of course, not in action.
Ex-Leeds defender Newsome was co-commentating on BBC Radio Leeds and his quotes were covered on the BBC Sport website. He gave his immediate reaction to the offside flag, as Anthony celebrated.
The Leeds players needed a few seconds to realise the goal had been ruled out. Newsome commented: “I don’t see who is offside, it’s a very contentious decision. That would have been the winning goal.”
