Kalvin Phillips posted images holding aloft the Premier League trophy on Sunday after helping Manchester City win their fifth title in six seasons, a year after leaving Leeds – prompting responses from Tyler Roberts and Alex Mowatt.
Phillips, 27, started his first Premier League game of the season on Sunday, as Pep Guardiola made nine changes to his side to face Chelsea. Only his 19th outing for City in all competitions, in what has been a difficult first campaign.
He somehow won a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad for Qatar in the winter, despite managing just four outings before the turn of the year. His game time has slowly increased since, after returning from a shoulder issue.
Phillips was impressive on Sunday as Guardiola’s men managed to win 1-0 – Julian Alvarez scoring. That is despite fringe players like Cole Palmer, Sergio Gomez and Rico Lewis all starting. Phillips posted on Instagram after the win.
Roberts and Mowatt respond as Man City’s Phillips posts on Instagram
While it will be frustrating on a personal level for Phillips this season, he has still achieved an incredible landmark in his professional career by winning a League title. Something that not many can say they’ve done in their career.
It is a testament, once again, to the wonderful Thorp Arch academy system that has once again produced a gem in the form of Phillips. But his future this summer will be an interesting one. Does he want to sit on the bench again?
Or, does he look to join a club that are perhaps, mid-table or in the Europa League where he is going to play week in, week out? Either way, Phillips will be delighted and Leeds fans will be happy for him. Roberts and Mowatt reacted.
