Alexi Lalas has criticised Tyler Adams after Leeds United’s loss at Everton, telling his State of the Union podcast that he needs to stop losing his cool in games.

Adams has been an absolutely outstanding addition for the Whites. As he himself noted, he faced a tough task trying to come in as Kalvin Phillips left. However, he has done a brilliant job.

Certainly, he is going to be one of the first players to attract bids if we cannot stay up. But he has bizarrely come in for some criticism in the wake of our last game.

Adams was actually praised by BBC pundit Jon Newsome as one of the only bright points from the awful trip to Goodison Park. But one of his countrymen has taken exception with the 24-year-old’s actions during the loss.

Adams was involved in a scuffle during the first-half. And that left most of the two squads of players getting involved. Both clubs have now been charged for their parts in the fracas.

Adams and Weston McKennie have collected five yellow cards between them in the three games they have started together. And that prompted Lalas to suggest that something needs to change.

“Just pass the ball, and make the tackles that you can do. And you can still be physical and get those oohs and aahs without getting in the face of somebody every single time you feel you’ve been aggrieved, which is sometimes what we’re seeing with Tyler Adams,” he told his State of the Union podcast.

“I love that he stands up for himself. I love that he stands up for his teammates. But at times, you look around and you’re saying: ‘what are you standing up for now?’ You’re creating an incident and creating an altercation where there didn’t need to be.”

It feels like a strange take from Lalas. Adams has got so little wrong this season. In fact, he has been our player of the campaign so far – when you look at all of the games.

Of course, there is an argument that it is not good that both Adams and McKennie are getting booked early on in games. Eventually, one is going to fall off of the tight rope.

Adams has already received one red card. However, that was not exactly because he let his frustrations boil over.

Ultimately, if Leeds are going to stay in the Premier League, we are going to need all 11 players to show the same fight and guts that Adams has brought to the side.

Perhaps it will land him in bother at some point. But honestly, that does not mean that changing his style in every game would be at all worthwhile.
