Tony Dorigo shares what shocked him after Leeds’ 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday

Tony Dorigo has shared the one thing which surprised him about Leeds United’s victory against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Friday night.

Leeds set the challenge for the other automatic-promotion chasers. Goals from Patrick Bamford and Willy Gnonto in either half saw Daniel Farke’s men pick up the three points.

Leeds have not looked particularly convincing in the last week or so. The Whites toiled to a 1-1 draw against a Huddersfield Town side who played the second-half with 10 men. And no-one could really relax until the final whistle in the 1-0 win over Stoke.

Wednesday meanwhile, had been in great form before the game. And with the Owls likely to need little motivation to get up for the game, Leeds could have struggled had they been short of their best.

Now, the visitors were certainly not in top gear. However, Leeds got the job done. And from the moment Gnonto doubled Leeds’ lead, it was largely comfortable.

Wednesday did put some pressure on late on. But the biggest save Illan Meslier had to make came in the first-half at 0-0. And speaking to LUTV, Tony Dorigo suggested that he was taken aback by how easy it largely was for Leeds.

“Well, for me, the surprise has been how really easy and straight forward this has been. I thought this would be more of a problem. Wednesday absolutely flying. But we showed our quality,” he said.

“We started the game extremely well. And Meslier, let’s not forget, had to pull off a wonderful save early on in the game. But we dominated, we were patient, we showed our quality right before half-time to get ourselves ahead. And second-half, I thought Wednesday would come out at us. They didn’t. We were the ones who continued to show the way.

“Really was an excellent performance. We deserved three points and on we go.”

Regulation 2-0 victories can be huge in dramatic promotion race

With the games coming thick and fast, Leeds can take real confidence from how comfortable the result was. One of the problems during Marcelo Bielsa’s first season arguably seemed to be that all the drama and late winners took a lot out of the side.

Ipswich have been involved in so many remarkable games this season. Meanwhile, Southampton have had to get themselves out of trouble on a number of occasions.

Leeds, since the turn of the year, have barely made a mistake. And given the depth we have in the squad, reasonably straight forward 2-0 wins are worth their weight in gold.
