Tony Dorigo has issued a glowing verdict on Leeds United’s January signing Max Wober, telling the Yorkshire Evening Post that he believes that the defender is looking like a superb addition for the Whites.
Wober was one of three first-team additions Jesse Marsch was able to welcome during the January transfer window. But it is probably fair to say that there was a little scepticism when Wober arrived for £11 million.
Firstly, Leeds’ two summer signings from Red Bull Salzburg have hardly proved to be overwhelming successes so far. Meanwhile, the idea of signing a centre-back who has largely only played at left-back this season hardly seemed ideal.

However, Wober has got off to a brilliant start. He was bright when he came on against Cardiff and Aston Villa. And Leeds actually managed to not concede while the Austrian was on the pitch during his first four appearances. That run came to an end at the weekend, in the FA Cup.
Wober has impressed at both centre-back and left-back. And it is probably fair to say that Leeds have hardly looked better defensively than they did against Brentford last month. The clean sheet was all the more impressive when you consider the quality of the attack they were up against.
Certainly, Dorigo believes Leeds have produced a masterstroke signing Wober in January.
“It was an important time to go out and get one or two but we have done better than that as we have got three. I think the Diego Llorente to Roma deal was a good bit of business too and it just adds to what has been a very good window,” he told the Yorkshire Evening Post.
“Of course, we need to hit the ground running with those new players but I have seen Max Wober two or three times now and I think he is superb. I think he will be a really important player in the second half of the season.”
The challenge for Wober is to keep this run going. There is a lot of pressure on his shoulders given that he was the only defensive addition of the window.
Leeds appear to have quality throughout their attack. So it may be the performance of the defence which ultimately decides whether the Whites stay up.
If Wober’s displays are a sign of what is to come, perhaps we will indeed be fine.
