Tony Dorigo has praised Ian Poveda on social media following the winger’s performance in Leeds United’s Carabao Cup win over Shrewsbury on Wednesday, suggesting that he edged the likes of Ethan Ampadu and Archie Gray for the man of the match award.
Dorigo was speaking on Instagram after Daniel Farke’s men booked their place in the second round of the competition with a 2-1 victory at Elland Road. Joe Gelhardt and Pascal Struijk scored the goals for the Whites.

Ian Poveda was handed the chance to start after his bright performance after coming on against Cardiff City at the weekend.
Dorigo praises Poveda after Leeds win
Poveda did not score. But he proved a real point with his display. Certainly, he is doing absolutely everything he can to show to Farke that he can have a role to play in Leeds’ potential promotion push.

Dorigo was asked after the win who his man of the match had been.
The former Leeds man picked out Ethan Ampadu and Archie Gray for praise as they impressed once again. But he suggested that the 23-year-old was his standout performer from the victory…

Admittedly, Poveda’s natural talent has never been in doubt. He is someone who has been on the books of the likes of Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester City. He is obviously someone with incredible ability.
But Leeds were not made to rue loaning him out over the past couple of years. So it would be no surprise if many supporters expected him to leave this summer.
Obviously, he still has plenty to prove. He now needs to make those game-changing impacts on a consistent basis. Ultimately, Leeds want to be back in the Premier League next year. And thus, they need to work out who could potentially step up a level.
But Poveda is really starting to prove many of us wrong. So hopefully he is able to really kick on from here.
