Tim Sherwood has told Sky Sports (October 4, 9:40PM) that Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford will be “ashamed” for his involvement in Asmir Begovic’s red card late on during our 1-0 win over QPR.
Bamford, 30, came off the bench for only his second outing of the season on Wednesday night with Leeds leading 1-0, replacing Joel Piroe. In injury time, he went over after latching on to a long ball.
Ex-Chelsea, Everton and Stoke stopper Begovic, who has impressed at QPR since joining the London side, came flying out. But replays showed that there was little contact between Begovic and Bamford.
The referee handed Begovic a red card and Lyndon Dykes was forced to go in goal for the last few moments of the match. Sherwood says Bamford will be “ashamed” when he sees replays of the red.
“I don’t think there is any [contact]. When I look at the replay, Patrick might be a little ashamed. He has gone down. When you see it first, it looks like Asmir might have caught him, the way Patrick goes down.
“Jimmy Dunne gets done in behind. Toes it. When you look at it from a different angle. You see the gap. He doesn’t touch him and he goes down. Red card. Surely they are going to appeal that and get off it.”
Sherwood: Bamford will be ashamed for role in Begovic red card
It isn’t a red card and it is theatrical from Bamford. The striker should have just carried on and gone on to score his first of the season. But, while there is criticism, it wouldn’t have affected the end result.
Bamford though, did play an important role in the win and with Joel Piroe struggling to rediscover his early form in the last couple of games – Bamford could be given a starting role on the weekend.
