Three left-backs Leeds could target this summer that are out of contract in June

As we enter the final international break before the last instalment of the Premier League season, Leeds United will be putting together a list of transfer targets ahead of the summer – and a new left-back will be high on the agenda.

Junior Firpo has come in and performed well, after 18 months of struggles with injury, form and momentum. But is he really the long-term solution at Elland Road? Or do Leeds need to go back into the market solve the problem.

Indeed, it is a problem that has lasted for a number of years. Not since Charlie Taylor’s exit have Leeds managed to find a left-back that has played on the left side of defence week in, week out. It is likely to be a priority for Leeds.

Gjanni Alioski, Laurens De Bock, Barry Douglas and Firpo have all tried to solve the problem but here we are. Maybe, Firpo will be trusted a little longer. If not, here are three left-backs out of contract in June that Leeds might consider.

Raphael Guerreiro (Dortmund)

Guerreiro is probably the best left-back in the world, that will see his deal expire at the end of the season. For many years at Dortmund, the Euro 2016 winner has established himself as one of the best left-backs in European football.

So, for that reason, it is likely that the 29-year-old defender will prefer a move to a club in Europe next season. But if there is any chance that Leeds could get Guerreiro on a free, then they should certainly attempt to do so, on a free.

Aaron Martin (Mainz)

More within the realms of possibility, and in accordance to the Leeds transfer plan, is 25-year-old Spaniard Martin. He has spent the last four years at Mainz, clocking up 116 games. He is able to play as a left-back, or on the wing.

Javi Gracia likes his full-backs to get in the box and Martin is more than capable of doing so – having a hand in 13 goals during his Mainz spell. Still young, he would be a very solid signing on a free transfer if Leeds can tempt him.

Jordan Zemura (Bournemouth)

Zemura has actually been linked with a move to Leeds. 90Min report that the Whites are one of a number of English clubs checking out the Zimbabwe star. His contract with Bournemouth is due to expire at the end of the season.

Boasting plenty of speed and a willingness to get forward, Zemura would be a solid signing. But he is far from the finished product and it might be that he plays back up to Firpo initially before breaking into the side after learning.
