Ross McCormack has lauded Crysencio Summerville and suggested that the Leeds United winger has the ability to terrify opposition full-backs after watching the Dutchman against Watford on Saturday.
McCormack was speaking on BBC Radio Leeds (broadcast on 23/9; 17:32) after the Whites blew the Hornets away to win 3-0 at Elland Road.
Crysencio Summerville has been outstanding when he has been available in the early stages of the campaign. Obviously, it was his goal which gave Leeds a last-gasp point in their opening day draw with Cardiff City.
He did not score against Watford. But he certainly made an impact on the game. Summerville was absolutely electric for Daniel Farke’s side. And on another day, he would have easily bagged a couple of goals.
McCormack lauds Summerville after Leeds win
Leeds have such an outstanding amount of depth in the final third now. So it would have been easy for one of the forward players to go under the radar after the emphatic victory on Saturday.
But McCormack suggested that Summerville was the standout for him when it came to driving at defenders and causing problems for them with his tenacity and trickery.
“Have a go. Obviously, there’s a correct time to do it or whatever. But I just feel with wingers these days, it’s very easy to come inside and pass the ball off. Whereas I believe he has the ability, especially him – the other wingers we have are good players as well – but Summerville for me is the one where if you get the ball to him at the right time, I don’t want to see him turn back, I want to see him take the full-back on because they are worried, and rightly so,” he told BBC Radio Leeds.
“Can you imagine someone with that pace and power running at you? He can go inside, can go outside, what can you do? You’re going to have to bring him down.”
Summerville was one of the players Leeds did well to keep beyond the summer. He was often one of the few bright sparks of last season. And he looks to be relishing his important role in the current team.
The £1.3 million winger’s decision-making has improved considerably since his first few appearances in the first-team. And he is almost emerging as something of a talisman. It is now very rare that Summerville gets the ball and fails to create something.
And Leeds now have the luxury of boasting a few players with that game-changing ability. McCormack picked out Summerville after Saturday. But on another occasion, he could have easily been talking about the likes of Dan James, Willy Gnonto, Georginio Rutter or others.
