Michael Carrick and his Middlesbrough side couldn’t get one over Leeds United on Tuesday night, who move top of the Championship table after a 3-1 win at Elland Road.

In the first half of the game against Middlesbrough, Leeds United were totally dominant, eventually going into half-time with a 1-0 lead thanks to Wilfried Gnonto’s fourth goal of the season.

Dan James shone for Leeds United against Middlesbrough, eventually scoring the Whites’ second on the night after an own goal from Max Wober got Boro back on level terms soon after the break.

Brenden Aaronson wrapped up the 3-1 win for Daniel Farke’s side in injury time. Leeds now have a one-point lead over Sheffield United in 2nd, who play Millwall at The Den on Wednesday night.

Middlesbrough fans heard singing ‘strange’ chant about Michael Carrick and Leeds United

Middlesbrough took plenty of supporters to Elland Road on Tuesday night, selling out their allocation of 2,916 for the game back in November.

In total, the attendance on the night was 36,422. Both sets of fans made their voices heard, but Boro fans were heard chanting what has since been described as a rather ‘strange’ chant.

TEAMtalk reporter James Marshment posted on X: “Michael Carrick, he’s won more than you” belting out the away end.

“Strange folk the Boro lot since he won precisely ZERO of those trophies with them.”

Michael Carrick shares Premier League verdict on Leeds United after Middlesbrough defeat

The Championship table paints a pretty grim picture for Middlesbrough after their defeat against Leeds.

Boro are now down in 6th but a whole 10 points behind Leeds United, despite both having played 20 games so far this season.

But the Boro boss was gracious in defeat, with Carrick making a Premier League claim about Leeds United after the defeat.

He said that Leeds have a ‘Premier League set-up’, before adding: “They’re a good team with a lot of Premier League players in there.

“We are learning and improving and going in the right direction. We have to close that gap.”

Next up for the Whites is a trip to Deepdale to face strugglers Preston North End on Saturday afternoon, in what is a 12:30pm kick off live on Sky Sports.
